Central Sardinia
Central Sardinia is defined by the Barbagia, a multifaceted rocky plateau located south of Nuoro in the eastern part of the island. Divided from north to south into several distinct areas—including Barbagia Ollolai, Mandrolisai, Belvi, and Seulo—the region offers a diverse geographic landscape. This upland area is known for its rugged rock formations and its significant expanse across the island's interior. As a geographical core, it provides a unique look at the highland structures that stretch across this part of Sardinia, showcasing a side of the island characterized by its elevated terrain.
Central Sardinia includes the Barbagia, one of the most distinctive and geographically diverse regions of the island. Situated to the south of Nuoro in eastern Sardinia, this area is a vast, rocky plateau that serves as the island's mountainous heart. The Barbagia is structured into several sub-regions that follow a north-to-south orientation. These are the Barbagia of Ollolai, the Barbagia of Mandrolisai, the Barbagia of Belvi, and the Barbagia of Seulo.
The landscape is characterized by its rugged rock formations and high-altitude plateaus, distinguishing the interior of Sardinia from its coastal regions. Each sub-region contributes to the overall character of this highland area, which is known for its stark and impressive topography. From the northern reaches of Ollolai through to the southern sectors of Mandrolisai, Belvi, and Seulo, the terrain offers a continuous stretch of elevated land and sharp geological features. This division is central to understanding the geographical layout of the island’s eastern interior. The rocky ground and elevated positions of the Barbagia dictate the natural environment of the zone, creating a landscape that is both harsh and captivating. For those exploring the interior, the Barbagia represents a significant part of the Sardinian highlands, offering wide vistas and a deep connection to the island's geological formation and its layered mountain structures.
