Notteri Pond
Villasimius
A shallow coastal wetland at Villasimius, separated from the sea by a single dune ridge — a classic flamingo spot.
Location
Villasimius
Coordinates: 39.11760, 9.51580
Stagno di Notteri lies on Sardinia's south-east coast in the municipality of Villasimius, just behind the isthmus leading to Capo Carbonara. Only a narrow dune ridge carrying Simius beach separates the brackish basin from the sea. The wetland is best known for greater flamingos, which rest here in large groups and are often visible from the road just metres away in the cooler months, along with avocets, black-winged stilts and terns. The shoreline is fragile: stay on the paved road and the beach side, as entering the shore zone disturbs the birds and is not permitted.
Highlights
- Flamingos often visible at close range
- Dune strip between lagoon and beach
- Right on the road to Capo Carbonara
Tips
- Do not walk into the shore zone — watch from the road and beach side.
- In the morning the light is behind you and colours are strongest.
Best time
Autumn to spring, when flamingo flocks are largest.
