Location
The free-standing trachyte block beside the road from Castelsardo to Sedini is a textbook example of wind erosion: wind and sand have hollowed the volcanic rock over millennia into the shape of an elephant with a lowered trunk. The block originates from the volcanism of the Anglona region. Two prehistoric domus de janas were cut into its base, so geology and early human use stand side by side.

History
The rock formation was created over millions of years by natural erosion. Its significance as a cult site dates back to prehistoric times, when the Domus de Janas, collective burial sites, were carved into the rock.
