Location
Established in 1999, Molentargius-Saline Regional Nature Park stretches between Cagliari and Quartu Sant'Elena, immediately behind Poetto beach. Freshwater basins, reed belts and the old salt-pan fields sit side by side in a few square kilometres — a rare combination in Europe. The park is best known for its greater flamingos, which have bred here regularly since the 1990s and can be seen year-round, alongside purple swamphens, avocets and many waders. Flat paths and cycling routes lead from the Su Stani Salidu visitor centre to the observation points. Come early in the morning or in the last hour before sunset for the quietest experience.
Highlights
- City-centre breeding colony of greater flamingos
- Historic salt-pan landscape with salt mountains
- Flat walking and cycling paths around the basins
Tips
- Bring binoculars — the flamingos keep their distance from the paths.
