The Monte Arcosu massif in the Sulcis holds one of the largest holm oak forests in the Mediterranean. The WWF reserve was created in the 1980s to save the Sardinian deer from extinction; from a few hundred animals the population has since recovered strongly. Besides the deer, wildcat, scops owl and Bonelli's eagle live here. Waymarked trails cross stream valleys with alder and oleander; visits require opening hours and booking.
