Nuraghe Meurru
Nuraghe Mereu is a complex Nuragic site near Orgosolo, known for its trilobate structure and proximity to the Gorropu gorge.
Location
Nuraghe Mereu, often referred to as Monte Mereu, is a significant archaeological site nestled in the Supramonte mountains near Orgosolo. This complex Nuragic structure, built entirely from local limestone blocks, showcases the advanced architectural prowess of the Nuragic civilization.
The complex features a main central tower (keep) and two secondary towers, forming a distinctive trilobate or three-lobed layout. Although parts of the site are in ruins, its original grandeur and importance are still discernible. The towers are connected by walls, though their precise arrangement is not always fully legible due to the state of preservation.
Beyond the nuraghe itself, the archaeological zone includes an extensive Nuragic village and a "Tomba dei Giganti," a massive giants' tomb. This combination makes the site a comprehensive testament to prehistoric Sardinian settlement. Its strategic position on a hilltop allowed for control over the surrounding territory.
