The Necropolis of Su Crucifissu Mannu, located near Porto Torres in northwest Sardinia, is an impressive testament to prehistoric burial culture. Amidst a vast limestone plateau, an extensive complex of Domus de Janas, the so-called "fairy houses," is revealed.
To date, 22 of these fascinating hypogea have been discovered, characterized by complex floor plans. Each burial chamber consists of an antechamber, a main burial chamber, and further smaller niches carved into the rock. Some of these burial sites were found sealed, providing insights into the unique burial rites of that era.
The division into three sectors – a southern, a central, and a northern area – highlights the systematic layout of this prehistoric city of the dead. A visit offers a deep insight into Neolithic architecture and the spiritual beliefs of Sardinia's early inhabitants.
