Location
The Necropoli di Molia, located in the municipality of Illorai in the province of Sassari, is an important pre-Nuragic archaeological site in Sardinia. The complex was discovered in 1976 during road construction.
The cemetery comprises nine Domus de Janas, rock-cut tombs carved into the soft limestone. Their layouts vary considerably, but all bear witness to the burial culture of people who lived in Sardinia approximately 5000 years ago. Some of the tombs are multi-celled, such as Tomb I with its eleven chambers. Although the condition of the tombs is partly severely degraded, they offer a profound insight into the island's early history and its religious practices. They are an impressive example of the rock architecture of the "Domus de Janas" and tell of a time when these caves served as final resting places and were associated with rituals and beliefs in an afterlife.
