Lake Baratz is Sardinia's only natural lake. It lies near Porto Ferro and the hamlet of Baratz in the municipality of Sassari, not far from Santa Maria La Palma and Villa Assunta near Alghero, and together with the coast forms the SCI "Lago Baratz – Porto Ferro" (ITB011155). It formed when shifting dunes blocked a stream's outlet to the sea — today only a wooded dune ridge separates the water from the beach. Pines, junipers and maquis grow along the shores; herons, ducks, cormorants and raptors are regular. A loop path with a viewpoint and a short link to Porto Ferro beach make the lake an easy half-day trip.
