Location
Grotta del Fico opens in the limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei between Cala Biriola and Cala Sisine. Its halls are rich in stalactites, stalagmites and rimstone pools; some formations now lie below sea level, marking former shorelines. Until the 1980s the Mediterranean monk seal used the cave as a resting and pupping site, among the last documented in Sardinia. Visits are only possible with a guide, usually arriving by sea.

History
The Grotta del Fico was once an important refuge and breeding ground for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), which used these protected caves for rearing its young. Today, the seal has become very rare in this region, but the grotto still tells its story.
