Catacombe di Sant'Antioco

The Catacombs of Sant'Antioco represent a unique testimony to early Christianity in Sardinia. Originally used as Punic burial chambers from the 5th century BC, they were expanded and interconnected by Christians from the 3rd century AD, forming an extensive underground necropolis. These historical passages and tombs offer deep insights into the burial rituals and faith life of the island's first Christians.

This site is of great historical and religious significance, being the only catacombs in Sardinia officially recognized by the Holy See. They are situated directly beneath the current Basilica of Sant'Antioco Sulcitano, whose foundations also originate from these ancient structures. A visit not only provides archaeological insights but also conveys a special spiritual atmosphere.

Within the catacombs, various types of tombs can be found, including floor-level burial chests for double interments.
