Overview

Villaputzu is an Italian municipality located in the Sarrabus-Gerrei subregion on the southeastern coast of Sardinia. Home to approximately 4,372 residents, it belongs to the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and is part of the Diocese of Lanusei. The town is situated on a short plain near the mouth of the Flumendosa River, nestled beside the Sarrabus hills. Located about 45 kilometres northeast of Cagliari, the regional capital, Villaputzu occupies a strategic position that bridges the coastal flats and the nearby elevations, making it a prominent settlement within this part of the island's landscape.

Location

The municipality of Villaputzu is situated in a geographically advantageous position within the Sarrabus-Gerrei subregion. Its territory spans a plain located near the mouth of the Flumendosa River, one of Sardinia's most significant waterways. The immediate proximity to the Sarrabus hills shapes the local landscape. Positioned roughly 45 kilometres northeast of Cagliari, the town serves as a link between the coastal lowlands and the inland elevations. Administratively, Villaputzu is part of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and belongs to the Diocese of Lanusei, with its physical location defined primarily by the river valley and the nearby sea.

Nature

The natural environment of Villaputzu is heavily influenced by the Flumendosa river system. The municipality is situated on a short coastal plain formed by river sedimentation near its mouth. This plain is flanked by the notable Sarrabus hills. The combination of a riverine landscape, flat coastal stretches, and adjacent elevations creates a diverse ecosystem in southeastern Sardinia, characterized by fertile soils near the estuary and the typical vegetation found along the local hillside ranges.
