Overview

Villanova Monteleone is a charming small town in northwestern Sardinia, nestled in the hills of the Santa Maria massif at an altitude of almost 600 metres. This municipality in the Metropolitan City of Sassari uniquely combines its inland location with proximity to the coast, as the sea is only 16 kilometres away. With a population of around 2,000 inhabitants, this place offers a tranquil atmosphere away from the major tourist centres. The geographical location between Alghero and Sassari makes the settlement an interesting destination for travellers seeking authentic Sardinian life in a panoramic mountain landscape without sacrificing accessibility to the region's expansive beaches.

Location

The municipality covers an area of approximately 202 square kilometres in the northwestern part of Sardinia. Villanova Monteleone is located about 25 kilometres southwest of the provincial capital Sassari and about 150 kilometres northwest of Cagliari. The settlement is situated on a high plateau on the slopes of the Santa Maria massif, with the altitude above sea level varying between 567 and 598 metres. This elevated position in the Alghero hinterland allows for wide views over the surrounding landscape. Despite the considerable altitude, the distance to the nearest beach is only 16 kilometres, creating a rare combination of mountain flair and marine proximity.

Nature

The nature around Villanova Monteleone is significantly influenced by the Santa Maria massif, on whose slopes the town is built. The landscape is characterized by its hilly topography and the considerable difference in altitude compared to the nearby coast. The region belongs to the Alghero hinterland and offers a mixture of low mountain character and Mediterranean influences. Due to the extensive municipal area of over 200 square kilometres, extensive natural areas can be found here, which form a contrast to the flatter coastline. The climatic conditions at this altitude ensure a varied flora, typical of the higher elevations of northwestern Sardinia.
