Overview

Vallermosa is a Sardinian municipality with around 1,800 inhabitants, belonging to the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. The town is located approximately 30 to 32 kilometres northwest of the island's capital in the Iglesiente subregion. Covering an area of about 62 square kilometres, the municipality offers a blend of historical heritage and natural surroundings. As part of the Parco Geominerario Storico ed Ambientale della Sardegna, Vallermosa is closely linked to the island's mining history and unique geology. Its location between the plains and the foothills of the local mountains makes it an interesting destination for visitors looking to explore the authentic Sardinian hinterland away from the major tourist hubs.

Location

The municipality is situated in a strategic position within the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and is geographically part of the Iglesiente subregion. Covering approximately 62 square kilometres, the municipal territory extends northwest of Sardinia's capital. A significant archaeological landmark in the vicinity is the Nuragic settlement of Matzanni, located about 12 kilometres west of the town centre. This location highlights the historical importance of the region, which was inhabited as early as the Nuragic era. Its inclusion in the Parco Geominerario further emphasizes the geological relevance of this site in south-western Sardinia.

Nature

The municipal area of Vallermosa is characterized by its membership in the Parco Geominerario Storico ed Ambientale della Sardegna. This park protects the unique geological formations and the industrial heritage of the region. The landscape surrounding the town is typical of the Iglesiente and offers a variety of flora and fauna. Its inclusion in this protected area ensures the preservation of natural resources and makes the surroundings an example of the link between geological history and environmental protection in Sardinia.

Culture

Culturally, Vallermosa is shaped by the presence of the Matzanni Nuragic settlement, located just a few kilometres away. This site bears witness to the millennia-old habitation of the region. Furthermore, its inclusion in the Parco Geominerario reflects the industrial culture and mining traditions that have long defined social life and architecture in this part of Sardinia. The municipality thus preserves both prehistoric and modern aspects of Sardinian identity.
