Überblick

Tertenia is an Italian municipality located in the province of Ogliastra, in eastern Sardinia. With a population of approximately 3,845 inhabitants, the town sits at an elevation of 129 meters above sea level in the picturesque Quirra River valley. The municipal territory extends directly along the Tyrrhenian Sea coast and is situated about 100 kilometers northeast of the island's capital, Cagliari. The village is nestled in a striking landscape between the peaks of Monte Ferru, the Tacu Mannu plateau, and Monte Arbu. As a key center in southern Ogliastra, Tertenia combines coastal proximity with a deep-rooted agricultural structure, offering travelers an authentic Sardinian setting away from large urban centers.

Lage

The geographical location of Tertenia is defined by its membership in the historical region of Ogliastra. The municipality is located approximately 25 to 27 kilometers south or southwest of Tortolì and about 20 kilometers south of Lanusei. The town center is situated in the Quirra Valley, enclosed by prominent mountain ranges such as Monte Ferru and the limestone plateaus of Tacu Mannu and Monte Arbu. The river Quirra flows through the valley. This strategic position between the mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea makes the municipality a significant point in Sardinia's eastern coastal region, with connections to Cagliari spanning a distance of about 100 kilometers.

Natur

The municipal area of Tertenia is characterized by a diverse topography ranging from coastal stretches to high plateaus. The Quirra Valley forms the central axis of the landscape. The region is framed by mountain formations such as Monte Ferru, Monte Arbu, and the striking Tacu Mannu plateau. These elevations define the panorama and provide a contrast to the immediate proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region's untouched nature is closely linked to traditional land management, which has shaped the landscape for generations.

Kultur

The culture of Tertenia has always been closely linked to Sardinia's agro-pastoral tradition. The lifestyle of its inhabitants is shaped by agriculture and livestock farming, practiced in the fertile Quirra Valley and on the surrounding mountain slopes. This traditional bond with the land is reflected in the municipality's structure and social fabric. The identity of the place is deeply rooted in the history of Ogliastra and maintains the character of a community living in harmony with the natural resources of its surroundings.
