Overview

Santa Teresa Gallura marks the northernmost tip of the island of Sardinia and is home to around 5,000 inhabitants. Located in the Province of Gallura North-East Sardinia, the municipality serves as an important link in the Mediterranean due to its prominent position on the Strait of Bonifacio. From the local beach, views stretch across the sea to the neighboring French island of Corsica. The town combines modern administrative significance with a deeply rooted history dating back to ancient times. As the northernmost point of the Sardinian mainland, the municipality offers a strategic positioning that makes it a significant center in the Olbia-Tempio region, both historically and geographically.

History

The historical classification of Santa Teresa Gallura is closely linked to ancient geography. The town is considered one of the possible locations of the ancient settlement of Tibula. In recent administrative history, the municipality has undergone several changes in jurisdiction: until 2016, it belonged to the province of Olbia-Tempio, before being temporarily annexed to the province of Sassari between 2016 and 2024. Today, it is an integral part of the Province of Gallura North-East Sardinia. These administrative shifts reflect the dynamic development of the region, while the supposition regarding the ancient city of Tibula points to a much longer settlement history at the northernmost tip of Sardinia.

Location

Geographically, Santa Teresa Gallura is situated at the extreme northern tip of Sardinia in the Province of Gallura North-East Sardinia. The municipality is located directly on the Strait of Bonifacio, the channel separating Sardinia from Corsica. Due to this location, the southern Corsican coast is clearly visible from the mainland under suitable visibility conditions. The municipal territory was historically part of the Olbia-Tempio zone and maintains its strategic role as the northernmost point of the autonomous region of Sardinia.
