Pula, also known by its Italian name Pola, is the largest city in Istria County, located in western Croatia. Situated at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula, it serves as a significant economic and cultural hub for the region. The city is characterized by a rich history dating back to Roman antiquity and is now a center for tourism, shipbuilding, and fishing. With a population exceeding 50,000 residents, Pula combines historical monuments with modern infrastructure and serves as the seat of the Diocese of Poreč-Pula. Its location on the Adriatic Sea has long shaped the character of this important port city.

History

The history of Pula is inseparably linked to Roman antiquity, during which the city flourished as the administrative center of Istria. Pula maintained this role as the region's administrative capital for centuries until it was superseded by Pazin in 1991. The city hosts a multitude of well-preserved ancient buildings that testify to its strategic and cultural significance within the Roman Empire. In addition to its administrative function, Pula has always been an important hub for trade and the maritime economy. Today, the city belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Poreč-Pula and preserves its architectural heritage as one of the oldest urban settlements on the Adriatic coast.
