Überblick

Porto Torres is located in northwestern Sardinia within the Gulf of Asinara and is part of the Metropolitan City of Sassari. Covering an area of approximately 102.62 square kilometres with a population of about 20,800 inhabitants, the city is a significant regional hub. Historically established as the first Roman colony on the island, Porto Torres today blends its ancient heritage with its role as one of Sardinia's primary seaports. The port ranks as the island's second-largest after Olbia and serves as a vital maritime traffic junction. Due to its proximity to the city of Sassari, there is a strong connection to the local university and administrative center, emphasizing the strategic importance of this location.

Geschichte

The historical origins of Porto Torres date back to the 1st century BC. The city was founded under the name Colonia Iulia Turris Libisonis and holds a unique place in Sardinian history as the first Roman colony established on the entire island. This early settlement significantly influenced the area's development and laid the foundation for its prominence as an administrative and maritime hub in northwestern Sardinia. Over the centuries, the settlement evolved from an ancient colony into a modern municipality, which today is part of both the provincial industrial consortium and the metabolic network of Northern Sardinia.

Lage

Porto Torres is situated in a strategic location at the center of the Gulf of Asinara. Geographically, the city lies approximately 25 kilometres east of Cape Falcone. As part of the Metropolitan City of Sassari, the municipality benefits from its close proximity to the provincial capital, which serves as the seat of the local university. The municipal territory covers an area of over 100 square kilometres and is defined by its coastal setting, making the port one of the island's busiest gateways. The connection to the province's industrial consortium further strengthens the city's economic position within the infrastructure of northern Sardinia.
