Overview

Monastir is a Sardinian municipality located within the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. The town shares its name with significant cities in North Africa and the Balkans but remains a distinct administrative entity in the southern part of the Italian island of Sardinia. As part of the Sardinia region, the municipality is firmly integrated into the administrative structures of the province of Sud Sardegna. The name, often associated with monastic structures, is also found in a similar form in Tunisia and as the historical name for the Macedonian city of Bitola, highlighting the wide distribution of this toponym across the Mediterranean.

The municipality of Monastir is situated in the southern part of Sardinia. It is assigned to the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and forms an integral part of the province of Sud Sardegna. Geographically, it is distinct from foreign locations of the same name, such as the Tunisian Monastir or Bitola in North Macedonia, which was also known by this name during Ottoman rule.
