Masainas

Masainas is a coastal municipality in southwestern Sardinia, belonging to the province of Sulcis Iglesiente. The village, home to approximately 1,200 inhabitants, is situated on a plain 57 meters above sea level within the traditional region of Sulcis. Its geographical position is defined by its proximity to the Gulf of Palmas and the foothills of the Sulcis mountains. Located about 45 kilometers southwest of Cagliari and 15 kilometers from Carbonia, the town provides a peaceful retreat in a rural setting. The communal territory covers an area of 22 square kilometers, blending hilly landscapes covered with Mediterranean maquis with flat coastal sections and lagoon areas.

The village of Masainas is strategically located in the Sulcis region, approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Carbonia. The settlement extends across a plain surrounded by gentle hills that gradually descend toward the coastal zone. At an elevation of 57 meters, the municipal territory offers a diverse topography ranging from inland heights to the lagoon landscapes of the Gulf of Palmas. The connection to the regional capital, Cagliari, is 45 kilometers to the northeast, making the municipality a link between the mountainous zones of Sulcis and the maritime areas.

The natural environment of Masainas is characterized by the contrast between the Sulcis mountains and the coastal plain. The hilly terrain is extensively covered with typical Mediterranean maquis, providing the village with its characteristic flora. A core element of the local natural landscape is the beach of Is Solinas, which belongs to the municipality and borders the Gulf of Palmas. The region between the mountains and the sea also includes valuable lagoon areas, forming a biologically diverse ecosystem.
