Macomer

Macomer is a town in the province of Nuoro, situated 563 meters above sea level in the central part of Sardinia. As the primary center of the Marghine region and the capital of the Union of Marghine Municipalities, it holds the official status of a city. The settlement is positioned on the slopes of the Marghine mountain range along the banks of the Rio S'Adde. Due to its location on the southern ascent to the Campeda plateau, it serves as a crucial transport hub where narrow-gauge railway lines branch off to Nuoro and Bosa.

Geographically, Macomer is located on the southern ascent leading to the Campeda plateau. The town is characteristically perched on the banks of the Rio S'Adde and nestled against the foothills of the Marghine mountain range. This positioning grants the town a central role in Sardinia's infrastructure. Serving as a junction for narrow-gauge railway lines branching from the island's main line, Macomer connects the eastern areas toward Nuoro with the western coast at Bosa, acting as a link between different island regions.

The surroundings of Macomer are shaped by the Catena del Marghine, the mountain range that gives the region its name. The urban area is situated in close proximity to the Rio S'Adde, which significantly influences the local topography. Furthermore, the transition to the Campeda plateau forms a prominent natural boundary to the north of the municipality. This mountainous location at over 500 meters above sea level creates a specific landscape defined by the ridges of the Marghine massif and the watercourses at the plateau's edge.
