Location
Su Nuraxi di Barumini is the best-known and most well-preserved example of a Nuraghic complex in Sardinia, and an exceptional testament to prehistoric Sardinian culture. This monumental site, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, offers fascinating insights into the construction and lifestyle of the Nuraghic civilization that flourished on the island between the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The complex consists of a central Nuraghe with four flanking towers, surrounded by a mighty fortress wall and the remains of an extensive Nuraghic village and Punic-Roman settlements. The excavations in the 1950s, led by archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu, revealed the impressive structure and significance of these unique defensive complexes, which are considered a hallmark of Sardinia.
