Menhir Genna Prunas

This impressive menhir, erected by the Ozieri Culture in the 4th millennium BC, is located in an agricultural field not far from the SS126 near Guspini. It bears witness to Sardinia's deep prehistoric roots, offering a fascinating glimpse into the islanders' early belief systems. It is thought to have represented the 'Dea Madre' – the Mother Goddess – a central figure in many ancient cultures.

Standing 1.67 meters tall, the monument is conical in shape and has a circumference of three meters at its mid-section. Its most striking feature, however, are the approximately thirty 'coppelle' or cult bowls carved into the stone. These small indentations may have served a ritual function, perhaps for offerings or for collecting rainwater for ceremonial purposes.

Although situated on private land, the menhir is an accessible and significant archaeological relic that makes Sardinia's rich history tangible. A visit offers the opportunity to explore the enigmatic world of the Nuragic era and its predecessors, and to sense the spiritual significance of this stone sculpture. It stands as a testament to the culture and spiritual practices of Sardinia's early population.
