Marceddì Lagoon

Terralba

Route

A Ramsar lagoon on the west coast between Terralba and Arbus — fishing village, wooden jetties and a special protection area.

Location

Terralba
Coordinates: 39.71110, 8.51840

Marceddì Lagoon lies on Sardinia's west coast across the municipalities of Arbus, Arborea, Guspini and Terralba. It has been listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since the 1970s and is also classified as a Special Protection Area under the EU Birds Directive 79/409/EEC. The lagoon belongs to the Region of Sardinia, which licenses professional fishing here — gilthead bream, mullet, sea bass, eels, crabs, sole and clams. Jetties and shore paths lead to the water from the edge of Marceddì village; the old bridge towards Sant'Antonio di Santadi is the best-known viewpoint over boats, herons and flamingos.

Highlights

  • Ramsar site and EU Special Protection Area
  • Traditional lagoon fishing with wooden jetties
  • Sunsets from the old bridge

Tips

  • The village has simple fish restaurants — clams and eel are typical.
  • The jetties are working fishing structures: keep your distance.
Best time
Year-round; evenings are best for light and bird activity.
