Location
Santa Barbara Cave lies deep inside the San Giovanni mine near Iglesias and was discovered by chance in 1952 while a tunnel was being blasted. Its walls are entirely lined with brown tabular barite crystals, with stalactites and stalagmites between them. The cavity sits within Cambrian limestone around 500 million years old and was completely sealed from the outside world. Visits use the mine train and combine geology with the mining history of the Iglesiente.
