Ancient Sorabile, located two kilometers north of modern Fonni, was a strategically important Roman mansio (horse changing station). It was situated on the historic "direttissima" road that connected Olbia with Karales (present-day Cagliari), thus linking the north and south of Sardinia. This station played a crucial role in Roman traffic and communication on the island.

Archaeological excavations, notably conducted by Antonio Taramelli, have unearthed the remains of this Roman settlement. They bear witness to the remarkable adaptation and presence of the Romans even in the more remote regions of Sardinia. Sorabile offers a fascinating glimpse into the infrastructure and daily life during the Roman era in the heart of Barbagia.

Although only ruins are visible today, the former significance of this site can still be appreciated. It is a testament to the Romanization of an island region often described as wild and inaccessible, and underscores Sardinia's importance to the Roman Empire.
