Location
The name Monte Crobu holds dual archaeological significance in Sardinia. Near Muravera, in the province of Cagliari, stands an imposing Protonuraghe, also known as a "Pseudo-Nuraghe." These early megalithic structures, built between 1800 and 1500 BC, are precursors to the classic Nuraghes and attest to the complex construction techniques and organized society of the Sardinian Bronze Age. This particular Protonuraghe is one of only about 300 of its kind documented on the island.
Another important archaeological testament to Monte Crobu is found near Carbonia, in southwestern Sardinia. Here lies an extensive necropolis of Domus de Janas, the so-called "fairy houses." These rock-cut chamber tombs, carved into tuff or trachyte, served as burial sites and places of worship. The "Domus de Janas di Monte Crobu" near Carbonia are an outstanding example of this prehistoric funerary architecture.
Emanating from excavations in the 1980s, the necropolis near Carbonia yielded numerous artifacts, including pottery and vases dated to between 3400 and 2800 BC. One of the largest chambers measures an impressive 9.5 meters in length, 1.80 meters in height, and 4.50 meters in width, preceded by a long dromos, an access corridor. These excavations attest to the long and intensive use of these sites and their importance for the pre-Nuragic cultures of Sardinia.
