Protonuraghe or altura fortificata Bruncu Brailoi

The Protonuraghe Bruncu Madugui bears witness to Sardinia's early Nuragic culture. Originally referred to as a "fortified height," it features an irregular, almost kidney-shaped plan and stands up to 4.5 meters tall. Its original function as a defensive or cult site is fascinating.

Excavations mainly date the structure to the Middle Bronze Age, although earlier assumptions placed it in the Early Bronze Age. About 100 meters away, remains of a hut village were discovered, yielding materials from the Late Bronze Age (13th-10th century BC) and indicating a longer history of settlement.

Today, Bruncu Madugui is considered one of the most significant examples of protonuragic architecture. It is an important testament to the megalithic construction and social organization of the time. For visitors, the site offers a deep connection to the island's prehistoric past.

Protonuraghi are a precursor to the more complex Nuraghi and represent an important developmental phase in Sardinian archaeology. Their robust walls and strategic location remain impressive today.
