Necropoli di Montalè

The necropolis of Montalè, also known as Domus de Janas, is located on the outermost edge of Sassari, near the settlement of Li Punti. This archaeological site dates back to the Late Neolithic, around 4000 BC, and impresses with its hypogea carved into the rock. Six tombs are dug into a limestone bench, offering a fascinating insight into the burial rituals and architecture of a bygone era.

Domus de Janas, translated as 'Houses of the Fairies,' are characteristic burial sites of Sardinia's Pre-Nuragic culture. They were carved from the soft rock with simple tools and often adorned with symbolic decorations intended to represent protection and a connection to the spirit world. Montalè is an outstanding example of these unique structures and an important part of the island's cultural heritage.

Visiting the necropolis allows one to delve directly into Sardinia's history and admire the craftsmanship of its early inhabitants. Although situated on the periphery, the site is of great historical importance and stands for the preservation and appreciation of Pre-Nuragic evidence in Sardinia.
