The Nuragic complex of Su Nuraxi in Barumini is the quintessential example of Sardinian Nuragic culture. Excavated by archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu in the 1950s and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, it is the best-preserved example of these unique Bronze Age defensive complexes.
The archaeological area includes a complex Nuraghe, comprising a central tower and four perimeter towers, a perimeter wall, and the remains of a Nuragic and Punic-Roman village that developed around the main structure. The name 'Su Nuraxi' simply means 'The Nuraghe' in Campidanese, a southern variant of Sardinian, highlighting its significance as the prototype of these buildings.
