With a population currently around 900 inhabitants, the municipality covers an area of approximately 130 square kilometres. As part of the Parco Geominerario Storico ed Ambientale della Sardegna, Villasalto reflects the close bond between the local community and the region's geological features. Geschichte

The history of the municipality is inseparably linked to the exploitation of its natural resources. For a long period, mineral mining formed the economic backbone of the region. The significance of this industrial past is recognized today through its membership in the Parco Geominerario Storico ed Ambientale della Sardegna, which aims to preserve the island's mining heritage. Historical population data show that at the end of 2004, the municipality still had over 1,200 inhabitants before the demographic structure decreased to current levels in the following years.

The municipality belongs to the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and borders areas characterized by significant topographical diversity. The municipal territory covers an area of approximately 130.1 square kilometres and features a mix of hilly terrain and river valleys representative of this Sardinian sub-region's geography.

The natural environment of Villasalto is characterized by significant geological formations and watercourses. A central element of the landscape is the Flumendosa River, which flows through the municipal territory.
